A Surprise Alights

I'm not certain, even after some stellar Google-aided research, if this is a damselfly or a dragonfly, and would love it if someone actually knew!

This little gal/guy alighted on the sticks of a gone-by plant out in the garden today on my walk to snap photos of a friend's mini-roses (photos to be posted soon, perhaps). I was about 3 feet away, but didn't dare move closer, even though he/she stayed perched for about 2 minutes!
